Where We’ve Been

Since 1999, Marathon County has been addressing the burden of tobacco at the community level. In 2000, Marathon County efforts received a boost from the 1998 master settlement agreement with the tobacco industry which led to additional funding for states to address the burden of tobacco.  In the years to follow, most counties in the state of Wisconsin had their own community coalitions to address the burden of tobacco in a very comprehensive manner, and there was much success from those efforts.

Recent funding cuts to the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program at the state level have resulted in a different structure for addressing the burden of tobacco at the local level.  As of 2010, there are 14 state wide tobacco coalitions called Multi-Jurisdictional Coalitions (MJC).  The MJC regions provide local coverage for addressing the burden of tobacco in Wisconsin.  Marathon, Portage and Wood Counties make up one of the 14 MJCs called the Central Wisconsin Tobacco-Free Coalition.  Each of the three counties has a local coordinator and there is also one MJC coordinator for the Central Wisconsin Tobacco-Free Coalition.  View the MJC map.
