Initiatives

Tobacco Control Program Sustainability has been identified as the number one priority by Marathon County members of the Central Wisconsin Tobacco-Free Coalition.  Securing the resources and support to accomplish the work of the coalition –human, social and material resources is essential.  Without funding for tobacco prevention and control, there are no resources for maintaining our state smoke-free air law, no resources for preventing tobacco use among children and teens, and no resources for educating parents on “other tobacco products”.

Tobacco Compliance Checks  are conducted in locally through the Wisconsin WINS program.  Wisconsin WINS is a researched-based campaign to reduce youth access to tobacco.  It uses a very successful Recognition and Reminder strategy that praises and rewards stores and clerks for not selling tobacco to minors.  Learn more about WI WINS.

  • In 2010, there were 99 tobacco compliance checks completed in Marathon County.
  • The rate of compliance in Marathon County was 76.8% in 2010.
  • Most of the sales of tobacco to minors resulted when the clerks looked at the identification, but didn’t look close enough to see that the identification belonged to a minor.

The Nicotine Anonymous Support Group meets every Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. John Episcopal Church, 330 McClellan Street , Wausau (Use back west entrance – upstairs).  Group contact is Ron at 715-573-4147

The Tobacco Intervention Program (TIP)  provides an alternative to citations for teens with their first citation for possession of tobacco.  Municipal Judges may offer TIP to teens who have received their first citation and who may benefit from this educational opportunity.  TIP is a one time, two-hour class.  Participants must complete a pre-class report and pay $10.  Contact Renee at 715-261-1900 for more information.
