- The strongest predictor of low-use or non-use of alcohol by young people is a belief that their parents will be upset if they drink alcohol.
- Young people who get information from both parents and school are the least likely to use alcohol.
- By not talking to their children about drinking, parents risk that their children will believe they approve of their drinking or don’t care.
- What parents say and do about alcohol is more important than any other single variable.
- There are personal limits of moderation for anyone who chooses to use alcohol.
- Alcohol use can disrupt normal brain development and interfere with maturation when consumed before age 25.
- Use of alcohol that leads to impairment or intoxication is unhealthy, risky and should be avoided and discouraged.
- The only risk-free choice for alcohol is abstinence.
